藥球除了最常見用於投擲相關的訓練應用之外,其實也能夠取代槓鈴做為負重的變化,而其優點是在托持藥球時手腕角度比持握槓鈴時更為友善,尤其是動作學習的階段,能夠降低手腕問題,更專注在動作本身。

而初學挺舉動作(CLEAN)時,以藥球取代槓鈴,上半身的動作能夠更自然地完成。從CLEAN動作延伸出的CLEAN & JERK 動作是很好的訓練,但初學者要上手並不這樣容易,這時藥球的CLEAN & PRESS也能有多關節、多肌群的參與,而且動作難度低,在許多訓練目標下都是一項好動作。
